One person is unaccounted for after a passenger boat capsized off Lamu East Constituency in northern Kenya on Sunday, May 25.
The unidentified vessel was near Kiwayuu Island with four people on board when it sank on Sunday.
The Kenya Red Cross, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, and other local agencies deployed to the area following the incident and rescued the other three people who were on the boat.
Local authorities said there had been a prior forecast of rough sea conditions in the area over the weekend, with waves of as high as two metres and wind speeds of up to 30 knots.
This then prompted officials to order the immediate closure of all beaches and the suspension of marine activities in the area.
Three separate boating accidents had also occurred off Lamu East a day prior. Authorities have already rescued several people, though search operations are still ongoing amid rough sea conditions.
