One injured after fire breaks out on cargo barge in Dintelmond, Netherlands

Published on:

One person suffered burn injuries after a fire ignited on a cargo barge in the city of Dintelmond in the Netherlands on Saturday, May 3.

The incident occurred at around 01:10 local time on Saturday when a blaze ignited in the galley of the inland barge Roadrunner as it was moored alongside another vessel in Dintelmond Harbour.

Two crewmembers attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful, prompting them to send out a distress call.

Fire engines from the neighbouring towns of Dinteloord and Willemstad as well as a firefighting boat rushed to the area shortly afterwards to render assistance. The firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze later in the day on Saturday.

The barge's captain was subsequently evacuated to hospital to undergo treatment for smoke inhalation and burn injuries on his upper arms.

The firefighters who boarded Roadrunner during the response effort successfully rescued the ship's dog, which had taken refuge in the hold as the flames and smoke spread beyond the galley.
