One dead, two injured following boat collision in southern Alabama

Published on:

One person was killed while two others were injured as a result of a collision between two boats in a river near the city of Saraland in southern Alabama over the weekend.

The lone fatality, identified as 27-year-old Brittney Sherman, was riding as a passenger on a boat along with at least three other people when it collided with another vessel on the Bayou Sara at around 17:30 local time on Sunday, June 15.

The two injured individuals have been identified by family members as Sherman's husband and their four-year-old son. They have since undergone treatment for their injuries.

Sherman had fallen overboard due to the force of the impact. Officials initially reported her as missing as her body could not be found.

Multiple local agencies including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Mobile Police Department, and volunteer organisation Daphne Search and Rescue participated in the effort to locate the missing victim.

Sherman's body was finally recovered shortly after 11:00 on Monday, June 16, approximately 100 yards (90 metres) from where the incident occurred.

The boat on which Sherman and her family were passengers was being operated by a 19-year-old male while a 52-year-old man was at helm of the boat that was struck. Neither of the two boat operators suffered injuries from the collision.

The ALEA has begun an investigation to identify the events that led to Sunday's incident.
