One dead, five missing after boat capsizes off southeastern Florida
One person is confirmed dead while five others are unaccounted for after a boat with ten people on board capsized off the Treasure Coast region of southeastern Florida's Martin County on Friday, April 11.
Local authorities first learned of the incident after it was reported by a Good Samaritan off the coast of St. Lucie Inlet.
The US Coast Guard said via X that its helicopter crews have rescued four survivors, one of whom confirmed that five of their companions went missing after their boat capsized.
A fifth individual who had also been pulled out of the water was later pronounced deceased, Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said also via X.
The four survivors were later airlifted to Martin South Hospital in Stuart. MCFR said three individuals had suffered non-life-threatening injuries whilst the fourth was in serious condition.
The capsizing occurred near St. Lucie Inlet State Park, an area known to feature hard coral reefs.
