One dead after tour boat capsizes in Arabian Sea off North Goa, India

India's Hindustan Times reports that one person is confirmed dead while 20 others suffered varying degrees of injury after a tour boat capsized in the Arabian Sea off the coast of North Goa on Wednesday, December 25.

Local police said that the boat overturned in rough seas after it encountered engine trouble some 60 metres off North Goa's Calangute Beach at around noon (local time) on Wednesday.

Initial reports stated that the boat, which had more than 20 embarked passengers including small children, may have been overloaded. All who were on board were thrown into the water as the vessel overturned.

Four of the passengers, two adult women and two children aged six and seven, were pulled unconscious from the water but were later revived.

A fifth passenger, who has been identified as a 54-year-old male, was also found unconscious. Tragically, this individual was later declared dead on arrival at a local hospital.

A police investigation has since been launched to look into the events that led to the capsizing, which occurred exactly one week after an earlier incident wherein an Indian Navy speedboat and a passenger ferry collided off Mumbai. That earlier incident left 15 people dead.
