Four people were killed while another was injured after a pusher tug and a recreational vessel collided on the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 30.
The incident occurred at around 21:00 local time when a tug handling empty barges struck the 24-foot (7.3-metre) recreational boat, causing it to capsize.
The latter vessel had five people on board at the time.
The tug's crew pulled a man and a woman out of the water immediately following the collision. Tragically, the woman died while undergoing treatment in a West Virginia hospital on Monday, August 31.
The rescued male remains hospitalised and is believed to be in critical condition.
The bodies of three other deceased victims were pulled from the river as the search and rescue (SAR) operation lasted into Wednesday, September 2.
A woman who witnessed the collision told local news outlet KDKA that the two vessels were operating without lights when the incident occurred.
Agencies that participated in the SAR effort included the US Coast Guard and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
