Four dead after tour boat capsizes in Romania's Musura Bay

Published on

Four people were killed after a tour boat carrying 14 passengers capsized in bad weather near the city of Sulina in Romania on Monday, July 28.

The incident occurred in Musura Bay, which links the Danube River with the Black Sea, as the area was experiencing strong winds and two-metre-high waves.

Vessels from various fire departments in Tulcea and Crișan as well as some Good Samaritans later arrived at the scene to render assistance.

Local authorities said there are 10 survivors, all of whom have been brought to hospital. Six survivors who had donned lifejackets were able to swim unassisted to shore.

The four deceased victims included a small child, local media reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the ill-fated boat had a maximum capacity of only 12 people and that it had set sail despite prior warnings that the adverse weather conditions in the area would make navigation hazardous.

The boat's captain has meanwhile tested negative for alcohol consumption.
