Evergreen ship loses 50 containers in rough seas off Peru

Published on:

A container vessel operated by Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine lost approximately 50 containers in rough seas off the coast of Peru on Friday, August 1.

Ever Lunar was at anchor in Callao Bay when she began rolling heavily, which caused some of the containers at her stern to fall overboard.

The Port of Callao was then temporarily closed while Peruvian maritime authorities ordered that vessel traffic in the bay be stopped to permit up-close inspections and salvage operations to be undertaken.

Local civil defence officials have assured that the containers that fell overboard carried no hazardous goods and that these would be recovered with the aid of tugs.

Peruvian authorities have begun an investigation to identify the events that led to the incident.

This is the second container-related incident involving an Evergreen Marine ship to occur in Latin American waters in less than a week.

Just three days prior, while en route from Brazil to Uruguay, the Liberian-flagged Ever Feat suffered a stack collapse with as many as 40 containers being damaged after she sailed through a storm.
