Dive tour boat capsizes in Red Sea off Egypt; all on board rescued

Published on:

A dive tour boat with six people on board capsized and sank in rough weather in the Red Sea north of the Egyptian city of Hurghada on Thursday, February 6.

The tour boat Triton had just completed undergoing maintenance and was en route to Hurghada when it capsized on the afternoon (local time) of Thursday.

Local oil company Gulf of Suez Petroleum (GUPCO) despatched rescue boats to the area after being advised by officials of the Red Sea governorate.

The GUPCO search and rescue (SAR) teams subsequently pulled all six of the tour boat's crew safely out of the water. Four survivors were rescued just minutes after their boat capsized while the remaining two were found and recovered following an extensive search of the surrounding waters.

The tour boat had no passengers on board at the time of the incident.

Triton's capsizing occurred on the same day that the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) published a safety warning related to dive boats operating in the Red Sea.

The warning was published in the wake of the November 25, 2024 loss of the dive boat Sea Story off Marsa Alam along with 11 of the 46 people who were on board.
