Containership, bulk carrier collide on Vietnam's Long Tau River

A container vessel and a bulk carrier collided on the Long Tau River in Vietnam on Friday, April 25, the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration (VMWA) confirmed.

The incident involving the 2,800TEU KMTC Surabaya and the Handysize bulk carrier Glengyle occurred at around 23:00 local time on Friday while the former was headed for Hong Kong and the latter was en route to Ho Chi Minh City.

The containership suffered a damage bow whereas the bulk carrier's stern was breached, causing oil to spill into the river.

The VMWA said that despite the damage, there were no casualties resulting from the incident and that tugs with spill response equipment have been deployed to the area to prevent the spread of pollution.

VMWA officials assured that vessel traffic along the route was not disrupted, allowing ships to continue to operate along the stretch of the Long Tau between Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City.
