Cement carrier refloated after grounding in Cuyahoga River

The 406-foot (124-metre) cement carrier Sunnanvik was refloated on the morning of June 20 after running aground in the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.

The river has since been reopened to all vessel traffic.

According to a statement from the US Coast Guard, a report of the vessel grounding was received at 00:43 on June 20. A response boat crew from Station Cleveland Harbor was dispatched to the scene and established a security zone around the grounded vessel.

The Sunnanvik was carrying approximately 3,500 tons of cement at the time of the incident. The vessel was successfully refloated at approximately 06:00.

No injuries were reported as a result of the grounding, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.

The Canadian-flagged Sunnanvik was built in 1978 and has a deadweight of approximately 8,600. It is owned and operated by Eureka Shipping, which is a joint venture between Canada's CSL Group and SMT Shipping.
