A cargo ship suffered severe damage following a collision with another vessel in the Gulf of Kutch just off Mundra Port in western India's Gujarat State on Friday, September 11.
The incident involving the bulk carriers KMax Emperor and True Mariner occurred in a crowded anchorage near the port shortly after 11:00 local time on Friday.
The two ships then moved away from each other and dropped anchor.
The Liberian-flagged KMax Emperor later began listing slightly to port as a result of damage to her port quarter. She was already low in the water when Indian Coast Guard vessels arrived in the area to render assistance.
Twenty-one of KMax Emperor's crew were safely evacuated while the remaining three stayed aboard to monitor the situation in coordination with the coast guard. Pollution control equipment has also been deployed to the scene in anticipation of a possible oil spill.
No serious damage has meanwhile been reported aboard the Barbados-registered True Mariner.
The coast guard has been coordinating with the Indian Directorate General of Shipping, the Gujarat State Government, and other national agencies in the emergency response effort following the collision.
Local media reported that KMax Emperor was still afloat as of Sunday, September 13.
