As part of a modernisation program, Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe is replacing two of its Rhine pusher boats with modern, diesel-electric vessels.

Propulsion for each vessel will be provided by two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) type 18R5 EC/150-1, each with an input power of 780 kW.

The two vessels will be built at Barkmeijer Shipyards in the Netherlands. Voith will supply a total of four VSPs and one additional spare propeller.

The new pusher boats will be used to manoeuvre barges on the Rhine in the Duisborg port area.

The VSPs’ robust design is expected to help minimise damage caused by contact with foreign objects such as anchor chains.
