Fosnavag, Norway-based fishing company Gollenes recently acquired a new trawler to be used primarily for catching herring and mackerel off the country’s western coast.

The DNV-classed newbuild, also named Gollenes, is the second vessel to be designed and built for the owner by Denmark’s Karstensens Skibsværft following an earlier and slightly smaller vessel completed in 2011. The newer vessel has an LOA of 69.99 metres, a moulded beam of 14.8 metres, a draught of three metres, a gross tonnage of 2,600, and accommodations for a crew of 16. Steel was used for the hull while the wheelhouse and the deckhouse are made of aluminium.

The owner requested the installation of a fish factory facilities to ensure the full utilisation of catch during subsequent processing. The RSW tanks have a total capacity of 1,970 cubic metres and are kept cool with the aid of two PTG FrioNordica 1,300kW chillers while a system of two vacuum pumps and four 90kW compressors from Cflow haul the catch into the tanks.

The trawling equipment includes winches, net drums, and pumps as part of a complete package supplied by MacGregor while the two deck cranes were provided by SeaQuest. The electronics suite includes sonars, radars, and a speedlog from Furuno, a Simrad autopilot, a ScanMar net monitoring system, a MaxSea TimeZero plotter, Sailor VHF radios, an Iridium satellite phone, and a Teledyne FLIR rotating thermal camera..

The propulsion setup consists of an Anglo Belgian Corporation 6DL36 3,995kW medium-speed diesel engine driving a Brunvoll Volda 4,500mm controllable-pitch propeller via a Brunvoll ACG 980 gearbox, two Brunvoll 950kW transverse thrusters, three Scania DI16 615kW generators, and a Marelli Motori 2,000kW shaft generator. The propulsion can run on either diesel-mechanical or diesel-electric mode and can deliver a speed of 16 knots while manoeuvring control is provided by a Brunvoll BruCon system. A shore connection allows the vessel to connect to the local grid for its electrical power supply while in port, reducing its dependence on the onboard generators.

The crew accommodations include nine crew cabins with en suite toilets and showers, a changing room, a lounge, laundry areas, a galley, and a medical bay. Space is also available for a Viking Norsafe MOB recovery boat with a dedicated launch/recovery davit and two Viking Norsafe 12-person liferafts. Also fitted are NorSap wheelhouse seats, an AC from LF Ventilation, furniture from Ekornes, and a central water mist firefighting system from Survitec.
