Norwegian shipbuilder Larsnes Mek Verksted recently delivered a new seiner to compatriot fishing company Camaro Fiskeriselskap.

Named after a local island, Nord-Fugløy was built to a DNV-compliant design developed by local naval architecture firm Skipskompetanse for seine netting and purse seining.

Kent-Arild Apneseth, project manager at Skipskompetanse, said the brief from the owner was to optimise a vessel for the coastal fishery and implement a new way of operating Danish seine, hauling the net from the stern in a manner that will increase efficiency and to be able to operate more securely in a larger weather window.

Nord-Fugløy measures 50 by 12 metres and boasts 400 cubic metres of live fish tank capacity, 499 cubic metres of total RSW tank capacity, a 300-cubic-metre freezer hold, and accommodations for 14 crewmembers. Propulsive power is provided by a Yanmar 6EY26 medium-speed engine connected to a Finnoy gearbox and propeller arrangement that will be used in conjunction with a Corvus Orca Energy 994kWh battery pack for peak shaving.

There is also a two-step gear with PTO/PTI connected to a variable speed shaft generator, which can be used both for power generation and as a standalone “take-me home” solution if necessary.

Apneseth remarked that there is no optional fuel giving the same range as diesel for the available storage volume on board. To avoid having to compromise between the storage of lower-emission fuels or cargo capacity, it was decided instead to ensure that the vessel is as efficient as possible. This then required a hull that is shaped to perform at its best at relevant loading conditions, engine type, and size plus a propeller suitable for the waterflow around the hull.

The accommodation spaces include cabins, a mess, a galley, a day room, a coffee bar, and a laundry area.

Nord-Fugløy will be based in Nord-Lenangen in Tromsø and will be operated along the Norwegian coast and in the Barents Sea.
