Italian survey specialist Subsea Fenix recently took delivery of a new hybrid unmanned surface vehicle (USV) supplied by UK-based unmanned systems specialist HydroSurv.
Subsea Fenix began operating USVs in 2018, initially deploying compact 1.5-metre platforms for survey operations.
HydroSurv said that, after more than 400 survey projects completed using these small-scale vessels, Subsea Fenix has demonstrated the potential for uncrewed technology to reduce the cost, complexity and personnel requirements associated with conventional survey mobilisation.
By late 2025, Subsea Fenix was looking to expand its capabilities further with a larger, more capable platform that could support a broader range of hydrographic, geophysical and subsea inspection missions, hence the decision to opt for a HydroSurv USV.
The USV, named Fenix 01, is a 5.7-metre battery hybrid platform that belongs to an existing series of craft developed by HydroSurv. The USV also boasts a modular payload architecture that allows it to be configured for different mission profiles.
Sensor options include multibeam echosounders, sub-bottom profilers, USBL, and side-scan sonars. For subsea inspection, the craft can be configured with a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) skid incorporating a Saab inspection-class ROV.
The propulsion arrangement includes two Rim Drive technology 11kW pod drives that also deliver enhanced low-speed control and station-keeping performance.
A significantly upgraded power architecture incorporates separate AC and DC generation systems alongside a 48V electrical architecture shared with HydroSurv's other USV series.
