New terminal inaugurated at Kazakhstan's Kuryk Port

A newly completed terminal has been inaugurated at the Port of Kuryk on Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea coast.

The newly inaugurated Sarzha Terminal increases the port’s cargo capacity. Dredging works in support of the terminal project were carried out by Jan De Nul.

Jan De Nul said both the project to develop the terminal will provide a significant boost to the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor. This maritime trade route through the Caspian and Black Seas is considered a reliable alternative to the northern route through Russia, or the southern route via the Suez Canal.

For the dredging works, Jan De Nul deployed the cutter suction dredger Vesalius. The successful works will enable the safe navigation and manoeuvrability of large grain cargo vessels and container feeders.

The Port of Kuryk is now operational and ready to handle new volumes of dry and general cargo, making it the first Caspian Sea port prepared for the estimated corridor capacities.
