The Australian Federal Government and the State Government of Western Australia have selected the site for a new defence precinct for naval shipbuilding and sustainment activities.
The site at Henderson will be focused on the sustainment of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) future conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines (SSN) and the construction of the RAN's general-purpose frigates as well as new landing craft for the Australian Army.
The selection of the site has been informed by technical analysis and thorough engagement between the federal government and the WA State Government, local industry and workers, traditional owners, and local community groups.
The program to deliver the defence precinct will now progress into a concept design phase, which will see further engagement between the federal and state governments, local industry, technical design and planning partners, and other key stakeholders.
The Henderson Defence Precinct will provide the facilities for deeper maintenance known as "depot-level", and contingency maintenance, both of which occur out of water.
A contingency dry dock capability and associated sustainment infrastructure will play a critical role in ensuring the long-term readiness and availability of the RAN's future submarines, the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) said following the announcement detailing the selection of the Henderson site.
The precinct will also include shipbuilding facilities for the construction of larger and more complex vessels and a modern sustainment yard for Australia's fleet of surface combatants.
"These capabilities will be delivered in accordance with Australia's domestic regulatory frameworks and international obligations, maintaining the highest standards of nuclear safety, security and safeguards," ASA said.
