New Spirit of Tasmania ferry begins delivery voyage from Scotland to Hobart

Alan Bosworth

The new Spirit of Tasmania Ro-Pax ferry, Spirit of Tasmania IV, departed Leith, Scotland, on June 30 to begin its 14,857-nautical mile (27,512-kilometre) delivery voyage to Hobart, Tasmania.

The 212-metre, 48,000-gross-tonne ship will travel via Gibraltar, the Cape Verde Islands, Cape Town, and Mauritius. According to TT-Line CEO Chris Carbone, the vessel is expected to reach Fremantle, Western Australia, in approximately six weeks, weather permitting.

The ferry will undergo a required four-day stop in Fremantle for importation procedures, a crew change, and provisioning.

The company said it is then expected to arrive in Hobart in late-August for a final fit-out, which includes installing interior fixtures, and for comprehensive crew training on emergency procedures.

Meanwhile, Carbone noted that work on the new Spirit of Tasmania terminal in Devonport is underway, with nine of the 27 marine piles for the new wharf now installed.

Its sister ship, the Spirit of Tasmania V, was also recently delivered to TT-Line last June 26.
