Norwegian tour operator Brim Explorer has named its two new fully electric high-speed passenger trimarans Brask and Bram.
The vessels are under construction in Norway and are scheduled to launch in spring 2027. Each trimaran will carry up to 180 passengers and have a maximum speed of 20 knots.
The vessels will measure 24 metres long with a beam of 11 metres. Herde Kompositt is building the composite hulls in Hardanger, while Horten Skipsreparasjoner will handle outfitting and systems integration.
The two-vessel programme represents an investment of about NOK200 million (US$21 million), Brim Explorer’s largest to date. It has received NOK40 million (US$4.2 million) through Enova support for electric vessel projects.
Brim Tech, Brim Explorer’s in-house technology division, developed the vessels specifically for battery-electric propulsion.
“We have been using our existing vessels as test platforms for several years, which has given us unique insights,” Brim Explorer co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Espen Larsen-Hakkebo said. “We know what actually works in real-world conditions, not just in simulations.”
Bureau Veritas will class both trimarans. The vessels are intended for sightseeing in Norwegian waters, with operations including the Ålesund–Geiranger route.
Brask and Bram will become Brim Explorer’s sixth and seventh vessels. Its existing fleet includes the 26-metre hybrid-electric catamaran Bard, which was delivered in 2024 and has a capacity of 146 passengers.
