An African government places orders for a new fishing vessel fleet. Finally, construction will soon commence on an all-electric lobster boat designed for eastern Canadian waters.

Spanish yard lays keel of new feed carrier for Eidsvaag

Spain's Zamakona Yards recently laid the keel of a new fish feed carrier ordered by Norwegian operator Eidsvaag.

Upon completion, the vessel will measure 71.1 by 17.6 metres and will have a cargo capacity of 2,000 tonnes. A diesel-electric propulsion system will deliver a speed of 13.5 knots.

The vessel is the second in a series of two ordered by Eidsvaag from the same builder.

DR Congo government taps Spanish builder for seven-vessel fishing fleet

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has selected Spain's Aresa Shipyard for the construction of new fishing vessels of various sizes.

The vessels will be operated in Lake Albert, Lake Tanganyika, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Aresa will also assist in the maintenance of the vessels and the training of crews.

Construction to begin on Canada's first all-electric lobster fishing boat

Construction will soon start on what will become the first Canadian-built lobster fishing boat to be powered entirely by electricity.

The vessel, which will be named Lektrike’l Walipotl, will utilise battery propulsion and a design developed by local naval architecture firm Allswater Marine. Upon delivery, it will be operated by the Membertou First Nation of Nova Scotia.

One of the unique features of the vessel will be its bi-directional charging capability. This means its batteries can feed power back into the local grid when not in use.

A new fishing vessel ordered by Norwegian owner Leinebris was recently launched into the water for the first time. The vessel, which is also named Leinebris, will be capable of three different fishing methods including longlining, seining, and net fishing.

Russia's Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant will soon commence final outfitting of two new crab fishing vessels ordered by local customer the Russian Crab Group of Companies.

Kapitan Skovpen (pictured) and Kapitan Firsov belong to a series that also includes Kapitan Egorov, which was delivered to the same owner earlier this year.
