The vessel is designed primarily for salvage operations but may also be used for towing, dive support, icebreaking, search and rescue (SAR), firefighting, standby emergency duties, oil spill response, and transport of cargo and personnel.

Kalas has a length of 80 metres and a deadweight of approximately 1,800 tonnes at maximum draught.
