The author, a southerner, now lives on the island of Jura west of Scotland. It is appropriate, perhaps, that one of such background should write about one of the great heroes of the Confederate States Navy.
Like the author, the subject of the very exciting book was born in the South and came to have strong connections with Britain.
The story of James Waddell and his ship the 'Shenendoah' is well known in general terms. She was the last and arguably most successful CSN commerce raider. Her final round-the-world raiding voyage was epic.
This is a very good biography of a very effective mariner and warrior.
