From Baird Maritime:
When first published in 1867, the Age of Steam was just getting under way. Diesel and nuclear power had not even been dreamed of.
Nevertheless, Admiral Smyth, a noted naval surveyor and geographer who commenced compiling this work in 1858, at the age of 70, included many references to steam powered vessels.
Including everything from "A", as in Class A, to "Zumbra", a Spanish skiff or yawl, the collection of 14,000 terms covers a lot of ground and many terms that are still in common usage.
Indeed, many of the nautical terms defined are not just in common marine usage. Many are very much still in general use.
A remarkable book. The publishers are to be congratulated for reviving it.
