From Baird Maritime:

Portuguese Joe Silvey was an illiterate fisherman from the Azores who arrived in British Columbia, Canada in the 1850s.

He may have lacked education but he certainly didn't lack enterprise. He was a true merchant adventurer. A fisherman, whaler, boat builder and saloon keeper, his interests were diverse.

Not only hyperactive in business, he raised ten children to adulthood. His many descendants are still well spread through British Columbia, many in the marine business.

A very interesting and personal story well told.
