The March 2011 Japanese tsunami which closely followed the late 2004 Aceh one have, through the enormous amount of death and destruction they wrought, concentrated the minds of the general public on such phenomena.
Of course, there have been many tsunamis and they are just one of a number of extreme examples that show us the enormous power of the sea.
The author, a noted and highly experienced physical oceanographer has studied most of the disaster causing marine phenomena for a large part of his career. This has enabled him to provide us with a very broad and deep overview of them.
The world, understandably, wants to be able to predict such disturbances in order to mitigate their sometimes tragic consequences. Scientific prediction is possible, to a degree. However, the world's best oceanographers still seem to be a long way behind some of our four footed friends. The author graphically describes the well informed actions of some Thai elephants that saved them and some lucky humans from the Aceh tsunami.
