By Basil Lubbock
From Baird Maritime:
First published in 1919, this is one of the series of fifteen "Famous Sailing Ship Books" by Basil Lubbock. The publisher, Brown, Son & Ferguson of Glasgow is selling the full set for the remarkably low price of £296.
These are absolute classics of the sea. The author is widely recognised as the greatest chronicler of the final, gloriousdays of sail, the clipper ship era. He brilliantly describes the ships, their owners, commanders, and the political and economic environment in which they sailed.
The China Clippers is typical of the Lubbock series. The China tea clippers were only around half the size of their wool and immigrant counterparts from the Australian run. They were nevertheless, beautiful, fast and efficient ships. Their names like 'Fiery Cross' and 'Flying Spur' were romantic and inspiring.
Lubbock describes them well in words, photographs, lithographs and high quality line drawings. Maritime historians cannot really afford to be without a set of Basil Lubbock's beautiful books.
