From Baird Maritime
With a thirty-two year career, the Royal Navy obviously got its money's worth from the battle cruiser 'Renown'.
Designed to be of battleship size and armament but with greater speed, the British battle cruisers were intended, in the words of Admiral of the Fleet Sir John (Jacky) Fisher, to "Hit first, hit hard and go on hitting".
As a class the battle cruisers met with mixed results with the 'Hood' and 'Repulse' meeting grisly ends at the hands of the Germans and Japanese respectively. 'Renown', on the other hand had a comparatively charmed life and did vast amounts of valuable work practically globally.
This very well researched and comprehensive history describes a great ship very well.
