A wild storm and severe winds of up to 100km in Melbourne caused the 'Spirit of Tasmania II', to break its mooring and crash into a pier on January 14.

With passengers onboard, the vessel swung at a 90-degree angle and crashed into the car bridge. Nine out of the ten mooring ropes holding the vessel snapped.

The ship has been secured alongside station pier, and all passengers and crew are safe.

The vessel will be unable to undertake its journey to Tasmania, and will not sail indefinitely. The Australian Maritime safety authority is investigating the incident.
