Russian shipyard tests FPU mooring facilities

St Petersburg’s Baltiysky Zavod shipyard has tested the mooring facilities of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit (FPU).

The mooring facilities will be used to fix the FPU to the hydraulic engineering structures of the floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) at Pevek.
The FPU was moved 13 kilometres off the shore and kept in fixed position throughout the tests, which included checking its resistance to tidal currents and the shore-to-FPU transport access.

Intended for operation in the far north and far east regions, the 140-metre by 30-metre FPU has a displacement of 21,500 tonnes and will have a crew of 69.

The Project 20870 FPU will operate as part of the FNPP.

The world’s first mobile power unit of low capacity, Akademik Lomonosov will supply power to industrial businesses, enterprises, offshore gas and oil platforms, and port cities of more than 200,000 people.

The facility can easily be converted into a desalination plant producing up to 240,000 cubic metres of fresh water daily.

The floating plant’s design service life is 35 to 40 years.
