UK research organisation to develop wireless charging technology for electric vessels

UK-based Perpetual Research Consultancy is currently working to develop technology wherein VHF frequencies will be used for wireless charging of electric vessels.

Perpetual Research Consultancy Director Dr Mike Taylor said the use of VHF would greatly improve existing wireless charging of vessels by offering benefits such as increases in power transfer, which will then lead to reduced charging times.

With research partners Marine-i and the University of Plymouth, Dr Taylor’s team intends to carry out experiments on different wire coil configurations and to thoroughly evaluate their performance characteristics. This will be followed by a feasibility study to determine the requirements of impedance matching networks for the new system.

The final stage of the project will identify procurement costs for the key components to enable the team to estimate the production cost of the system when manufactured at scale, Dr Taylor added.
