Kolkata yard launches future Indian Navy survey ship

Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) launched a new hydrographic survey ship slated for the Indian Navy on Thursday, May 26.

The future INS Nirdeshak is the second of a planned four vessels to be built under the navy’s Survey Vessel (Large) (SVL) project. Once completed, it will have a displacement of 3,400 tonnes, a crew complement of 235, a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a maximum speed of 18 knots.

The next phase of the future Nirdeshak‘s construction will be undertaken by shipbuilder Larsen and Toubro as part of a collaborative agreement with GRSE. Delivery is scheduled for April 2023.
