The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) has launched a new icebreaker concept vessel equipped with an innovative hybrid motorised removable bow.

The vessel, which is named Calypso, features a motorised icebreaking removable bow that will enable ice-strengthened vessels to be used as icebreakers during the winter.

The bow fitted on Calypso is capable of breaking ice up to 70 centimetres thick. It was built by local company Turku Repair Yard.

Calypso is currently moored in Mustola harbor in Lappeenranta and has begun operating on Lake Saimaa and the deep waterways of the surrounding area this winter.
