Dutch consortium selects vessels to be used for methanol fuel tests

Nine vessels from various Dutch operators including private companies and the Royal Netherlands Navy have been selected to serve as testbeds for a project that seeks to determine the viability of methanol as fuel for marine transport.

The evaluations will be carried out by the Green Maritime Methanol consortium composed of the Ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Royal Netherlands Naval Institute, and the IMO’s Maritime Knowledge Centre.

The nine ships that will participate have been carefully selected and range in size from 40 metres to 160 metres in length with tonnage between 300 DWT and 23,000 DWT and total power output ranging from one MW to 12 MW. The selection includes naval vessels, cargo ships, ferries, and dredgers.

The tests will be carried out until the end of 2020.
