Four missing after tanker, cargo ship collide off Maluku, Indonesia

Four cargo vessel crewmembers have gone missing following a collision with another ship off the Indonesian province of Maluku on Friday, October 29.

The wooden-hulled cargo vessel Maju 9 capsized after it was struck by the chemical tanker New Global near Maluku’s Aru Islands on the morning (local time) of Friday.

The incident occurred as both ships were manoeuvring to avoid small fishing boats that were also in those waters.

All of Maju 9‘s 32-strong crew ended up in the water following the capsizing. However, only 28 of the crew have been rescued as the remaining four individuals could not be found.

New Global later sailed to the port of Dobo in Maluku to disembark the rescued sailors.

As of Tuesday, November 2, the tanker was still anchored off Dobo as part of the investigation into the mishap.
