Fincantieri launches logistic support ship for the Italian Navy

On June 22, Fincantieri launched the logistic support ship (LSS) Vulcano at its Muggiano facility at the Naval Integrated shipyard.

The ship was ordered as part of a renewal plan of the Italian Navy’s fleet.

The LSS will offer logistics support to the fleet and is endowed with healthcare capabilities thanks to the presence of a fully equipped hospital that is capable of hosting up to 17 seriously injured patients.

The ship is 193 metres long, has a speed of 20 knots and can accommodate 200 people including crew and specialists.

The multi-year renewal program also includes the construction of a transport and landing unit, being built at the same shipyard with delivery in 2022.

The program also includes construction of seven multi-purpose offshore patrol ships, with another three vessel available as options.

The launch of the first of these ships is scheduled in 2019, with delivery in 2021. The following deliveries will take place in 2022, 2023, two units in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
