Cement carrier runs aground near Iceland’s Helguvik Port

A cement carrier ran aground on a breakwater near the port of Helguvik on the west coast of Iceland on Saturday, November 3.

The 94-metre Fjordvik was arriving from Aalborg, Denmark, and was inbound to the port when it missed the harbour entrance and ended up on the rocky breakwater.

The vessel had a pilot on board at the time of the incident.

Fjordvik sustained a hull breach, which then resulted in an oil spill. The extent of the ship’s damage or of the oil spill has not yet been disclosed.

All of Fjordvik’s crewmembers were safely evacuated by helicopter.

Bad weather reportedly caused the vessel to miss the harbour entrance.

The incident is currently under investigation.
