A new solar-powered catamaran vessel designed for collecting marine rubbish was launched in Hamburg on Wednesday, July 21.

Circular Explorer will be operated by German environmental non-profit One Earth-One Ocean (OEOO). It is capable of recovering up to 4,000 kilograms of plastic waste in one day.

The vessel’s first operational deployment will be in the Baltic Sea, where it will be used to recover ghost fishing nets. It will then be deployed in Manila Bay in the Philippines in 2022.

Circular Explorer was built with materials provided by Holcim.
