Pilot dies following ship transfer mishap in Humber Estuary, UK

The UK Maritime Pilots’ Association (UKMPA) has confirmed that a maritime pilot died in an accident that occurred while he was transferring from a pilot boat to an ocean-going vessel in the Humber Estuary on Sunday, January 8.

The exact cause of the death of pilot Francesco Galia is yet unknown, though the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has opened a full investigation and will report in due course.

The UKMPA added that the incident highlights the risks and challenges faced by pilots and that their work of safely navigating ships in and out of harbours is always a risky procedure.

In a statement, the association said it is once again urging maritime industry and regulatory authorities to prioritise safety and training with regard to the transfer of pilots and crew. It also called for investing in safe and reliable technologies and procedures to ensure pilots and seafarers return home safe after every voyage.
