Icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin delivered to Rosmorport

A new Project 22600 icebreaker was handed over to Russian port operator Rosmorport at Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, November 3.

Built by Admiralty Shipyard, the 146- by 29-metre Viktor Chernomyrdin is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system that delivers a free running speed of 17.8 knots. It could also enable the vessel to break through ice of up to two metres thick at a continuous running speed of two knots.

Due to the high degree of onboard automation, icebreaking activities may be controlled by only one operator from the bridge.

In addition to carrying out icebreaking duties, the vessel will also be used for research missions, cargo and personnel transport, towing, firefighting, and support for offshore drilling and installation projects.

Viktor Chernomyrdin‘s area of operations will include the Gulf of Finland, though it may also be operated in Arctic and Antarctic waters if needed.
