Norwegian fish farm operator Nordlaks has reported that a fire had ignited on one of its vessels on the morning (local time) of Saturday, November 27.

The aquaculture support workboat Monica was conducting regular operations at some fish cages off Djupvik in the country’s Nordland region when a blaze erupted below the main deck at around 09:45 on Saturday.

Nordlaks said the fire was extinguished minutes later by the vessel’s three-strong crew. No injuries were reported, though the crew were still brought to hospital to undergo routine medical checks.

Monica was later towed some distance away from the cages to allow local police and coast guard officials to survey the damage.

Nordlaks added that the vessel remains in the custody of the local police and will be returned to the company and brought to a shipyard for repairs upon completion of an investigation.
