From Baird Maritime:
This is the second edition of a book first published 40 years previously in 1967. That is most unusual in the world of maritime history.
It is, therefore, a good and popular book. The experience "send a gunboat" is a famous and familiar one to most people with even a vague knowledge of British history.
While remaining faithful to the famous first edition, the 2007 version is a significant improvement. Better printed and with an improved layout and many new illustrations, it is well worth the investment by anyone interested in naval, shipbuilding or maritime history.
Most of the British gunboats of the Victorian era were elegant and effective little ships. They are the stuff of legend but many deserved to become legendary.
The once powerful British Empire was a curious beast. It was largely maintained with a very light touch. The gunboats did much of that touching.
This delightful book brings them back to life very effectively.
