Ireland-based Safehaven Marine has launched 'Joa Vaz Corte-Real', the first in an order of four Interceptor 38 11.5-metre pilot vessels for the Azores. The vessel was built in accordance with regulations set by the Portuguese maritime authorities and Bureau Veritas.
'Joa Vaz Corte-Real' has undergone extensive sea trials at Safehaven's home port of Cork. Powered by twin Volvo D9 425 hp engines on ZF 'V' Drive gearboxes, the vessel achieved a maximum speed of 25 knots and operational speeds over twenty knots. The vessel is engineered for hot-climate operation with twin 300-millimetre axial engine room fans drawing air through large, mist eliminator type ventilation ducts.
The vessel is based on Safehaven's Genesis Interceptor 11.5m hull, with a new design pilot boat superstructure. The more central cabin position allows for an aft cockpit fitted with a Mampray quick-release towing slip hook. The design also incorporates a pusher bow that allows the vessel to be used for occasional pusher tug duties assisting pilots in manoeuvring smaller ships.
'Joa Vaz Corte-Real' features four pilot seats in staggered height configuration to provide optimum visibility. The central helm position allows control for the helmsman equally when boarding to port or starboard. A full navigation package centred around Simrad's large multi-function displays is integrated into the helm console.
