New Zealand boatbuilder unveils hydrogen electric RIB prototype
Christchurch, New Zealand-based boatbuilder King Watercraft recently unveiled a new rigid inflatable boat (RIB) that will be fitted with a hybrid hydrogen electric propulsion system.
Named H2Ocean, the RIB is being developed to serve the maritime tourism, security, and leisure markets. Its sea trials are scheduled to begin in January 2025.
Various configurations will be made available including one as a passenger transport with seating for up to 12 people. The RIB may also be used for other specialist functions such as search and rescue (SAR) and as a racing chase boat.
The boat will carry 18 kg of hydrogen compressed at 350 bar. The hydrogen will then be supplied to a fuel cell, which in turn maintains charging to a battery bank that is used to power the two electric stern drives.
The RIB has an aluminium hull, hypalon pontoons, a displacement of 3,500 kg, and a range of 150 nautical miles.
The development of H2Ocean is being undertaken in collaboration with hydrogen power specialist Fabrum.
