Russian research ship Akademik Tryoshnikov completes Antarctic expedition

Published on:

Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) reports that the research vessel Akademik Tryoshnikov returned to Saint Petersburg late last week following an eight-month expedition that included two deployments to Antarctica.

During the deployments, scientists aboard the ship conducted research activities in the Southern Ocean and ferried personnel and cargo to Russia's Antarctic science stations.

The ship's recently concluded Antarctic expedition is part of a Russian-Brazilian project organised by the AARI and the Polar and Climate Centre of the Institute of Geosciences of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.

The scientific team embarked on Akademik Tryoshnikov consisted of approximately 60 personnel from Russia, China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The multinational team spent two months in Antarctica, where they closely studied the various ecosystems found on the continent.

The ship returned to Rio Grande in January 2025 upon the completion of the expedition. After she disembarked the scientists from the other countries in Brazil, she returned to Antarctica to continue scientific activities on behalf of the AARI before finally returning to Saint Petersburg.

Akademik Tryoshnikov will spend two months in Saint Petersburg before heading north to the Arctic for a new expedition, the AARI confirmed.
