Marine Institute of Ireland to deploy research vessel for EEZ mapping in Barbados

Published on:

This summer, experts from the Marine Institute of Ireland will use the research vessel Celtic Explorer to begin mapping the seabed in Barbados' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The deployment of the vessel will be in fulfilment of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that was recently signed by the Marine Institute and the Coastal Zone Management Unit of Barbados.

The MOU agreement facilitates use of Celtic Explorer to undertake a bathymetric survey of Barbados’ ocean floor. The survey will assess the water depth around Barbados, map underwater features, and enable evaluation of the seafloor for potential resources.

The data gathered will guide policymakers and stakeholders in the preparation of a marine spatial plan for the management of the natural resources within Barbados' EEZ.

The deployment will fall under the Marine Institute's programme that supports research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building in partnerships with small island developing states.

The activity is funded by the Irish Government through its programme for overseas development and managed by the Marine Institute.
