The San Francisco Bar Pilots Benevolent and Protective Association of California has selected Freeland, Washington-based Nichols Brothers Boat Builders for the construction of a new pilot boat.
Designed by Glosten and with a length of approximately 110 feet (34 metres) upon completion, the new pilot station vessel will be purpose-built to support the San Francisco Bar Pilots as they safely guide commercial vessels through the challenging waters of San Francisco Bay and near the Golden Gate Bridge.
The pilot boat's US EPA Tier IV diesel propulsion will be designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while meeting California Air Resources Board emissions requirements.
Designed for continuous offshore service, the vessel will incorporate modern accommodation, enhanced seakeeping characteristics, and the endurance necessary to support around-the-clock pilot operations.
Glosten will lead the vessel design phase of the project while Maritime Consulting Partners will provide owner's representation and project management services throughout the procurement and construction process.
