Penang Port of Malaysia has awarded the Damen Shipyards Group a contract for the construction of five Ro-Pax ferries in a series for operation between the Malaysian Peninsula and Penang Island.

Each vessel will have capacity for 250 passengers and 50 motorcycles and scooters. Deliveries are scheduled for the middle of 2023.

As part of the contract, Damen will provide technical support for one year. A local maintenance hub will also be established to ensure the ferries are kept in working condition.

Damen will also be assisting in upgrading the ferry terminals on the route with features such as auto berthing and berthing pontoons with fast ramp control.
