Holland Shipyards Group to build two electric ferries for Boreal

Norwegian transport company Boreal has awarded Holland Shipyards Group a contract for the delivery of two fully electric ferries.

The contract covers the construction of one 49- by 14-metre vessel and one 29- by 10-metre vessel. The former will have capacity for 146 passengers and 35 cars and the latter will be able to transport 96 passengers and 10 cars.

Both vessels will be equipped for shore charging to enable all-day operations on electric power. Back-up generators which could run on bio-diesel will also be installed for use when the electric propulsion systems are inoperative.

The ferries will be put into operation on the Abelnes-Andabeløy and Launes-Kvellandstrand routes in Norway’s Agder province.
