Vietnamese tour boat capsizing leaves 13 dead; four others missing

Thirteen people were killed after a tour boat capsized off the coast of central Vietnam on Saturday, February 26.

The unidentified vessel had 39 passengers and crew on board when it encountered rough weather and sea conditions that led to the capsizing in the waters off the resort town of Hoi An.

Search and rescue (SAR) teams deployed to the incident site immediately afterwards to render assistance. However, the rescue effort had to be postponed in the early evening (local time) of Saturday due to the fading light.

SAR operations resumed at first light on Sunday, February 27. By this time, 22 survivors and 13 deceased individuals have been found in the surrounding waters.

A local official said another four individuals who were on the boat remain unaccounted for. This number includes two children.

An investigation will be conducted to identify the events that led to the mishap.
